Rameswaram is a town, located on Pamban Island in Ramnathapuram district in the state of Tamilnadu. The Island is separated from the land India by the Pamban channel and is about 50-60 Kilometers from Mannar Island, Srilanka. The Rameswaram Island is connected to mainland India by Pamban Bridge.
Rameswaram is famous by the temple Sri Ramanathaswamy temple. The Rameswaram name itself relieves that, Lord Rama who worshiped the lord Shiva (Ishwar) to expiate his sin due to killing of Raavana, the king of Lanka. According to ancient history, in Gulf of Mannar lord Rama build a bridge Ram Setu (Adam’s Bridge) across the sea to Srilanka to rescue his consort Sita from Raavana.

There are around 64 Theerthas around the Rameswaram Island. Rameswaram is equally Sacred for both Vaishnavites and Shaivites. One of the seas nearest to the temple named as Agni Theertha, considered as most powerful Theertha which absolved the sin of all people. There is a belief among the Hindu pilgrims that a pilgrimage to Kashi will be complete only after they visit to Rameswaram.
The presiding deity here is usually referred to as Linga, it is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. Rameswaram is also one among the four famous sacred places in India. They are Puri in the East, Dwaraka in the West, Badrinath in the North and Rameswaram in the South.

Along with main temple Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple, there are lots of temples around the Rameswaram Islands. Ramar Patham is a temple where we can see the Foot print of Rama. According to the Hindu religious only from this place Rama saw the Srilanka. Also temples like Gothanda Ramar temple, Panchamuga Anjaneya (Lord Anjaneya with Five faces), Nambu Nayagi Amman Temple are other popular temples in Rameswaram.
There are many Beaches around the Rameswaram Island. They are Olakudai Beach, Moonram Chathiram Beach, Pamban Beach, Ariyaman Beach and Danushkodi Beach. Sethu Karai is a place where Lord Ram is built a floating stone bridge Ram Sethu that further continued to Dhanuskodi in Rameswaram upto Talaimanar in Srilanka as mentioned in Epic.

In Rameswaram, the majorities of the peoples are Hindus and then followed by Muslims and Christians. Their most employment is around the temple only. Also Rameswaram is a fishing centre of Tamilnadu. More than 40% of people business is fishing.
